Traditionally, colon operations have been performed through large incisions running up and down the length of the abdomen. The section of the colon is removed, and then the two ends of the bowel are joined back together. Because of the nature of this highly invasive procedure, patients often face a long and difficult healing process.

All the major maneuvers previously done through the large opening is performed through tiny dime-sized incisions without opening the abdomen to the air.
