"Laparoscopic" or “minimally invasive” surgery describes the technique we use to gain access to the internal surgery site using tiny incisions and operate without opening up the abdomen to air.

During the surgery, we use a tiny port (a narrow tube like instrument) to enter the abdomen. A laparoscope (a tiny telescope connected to a video camera) is inserted through the port, giving us a magnified view of the internal organs on a video monitor.

Specialized surgical instruments are then paced through additional ports to allow us to work inside and remove a potion of the colon. The diseased part of the colon is removed through a 2 inch incision and the ends of the colon are then joined back together to complete the procedure.
